Abstract:
Recently, generative AI (genAI) and especially large language model (LLM) chatbots have rapidly proliferated in systems supporting collaborative learning, and the first investigations into the effects of these systems are now emerging. In this webinar I will highlight the potential of genAI for computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and illustrate the roles that genAI can play during collaboration and which aspects of the collaboration it can support. I will review the emerging research on its effects and discuss potential problems of using genAI for collaboration support. My conclusion seeks to contribute to a research agenda and stimulate a critical discussion of the capabilities of genAI in CSCL.
Biodata:
Nikol Rummel currently (2022-2027) directs the research program on Educational Technologies and Artificial Intelligence at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) in Bochum, Germany. She is professor of Educational Psychology and Technology at the Institute of Educational Research at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. Her research focuses on computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL); adaptive instructional support for learning as provided, for instance, in intelligent tutoring systems; teacher-student-AI co-orchestration; learning from problem-solving prior to instruction; as well as (collaborative) learning process analysis and analytics. She has acquired competitive research grants on these topics from various German and international funding organizations and has published numerous journal articles in leading international research journals, as well as refereed book chapters and conference papers on her work. She is associate editor of the International Journal of CSCL. She is past president (2016-17) of the International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS) and was awarded ISLS Fellow in 2019.
