Abstract:

The rapid convergence of generative artificial intelligence, multimodal sensing, learning analytics, immersive technologies, and adaptive learning environments is transforming educational systems. The central challenge is no longer how to make learning technologies more intelligent, but how to design integrated, deployable, human-centered ecosystems that help learners become more aware, strategic, adaptive, and self-regulated in Al-mediated learning environments. This talk presents a research program connecting multimodal data, learner modeling, artificial intelligence, and adaptive support to advance metacognitive and self-regulated learning (SRL).

Drawing on research spanning intelligent tutoring systems, multimodal learning analytics, simulation and immersive learning, generative Al, open learner models, and human-Al collaboration, Dr. Azevedo will describe an emerging architecture in which learning technologies integrate behavioral, cognitive, affective, motivational, and performance data to construct interpretable learner models and provide context-sensitive metacognitive support. Generative and agentic Al can be embedded within these ecosystems without displacing learner agency or assuming responsibility for planning, monitoring, and reflection. The talk will conclude by outlining research and infrastructure priorities for scalable, interoperable, transparent, privacy-conscious, and sustainable learning technology ecosystems that connect sensing, analytics, learner modeling, Al orchestration, feedback, and human decision-making.

Dr. Roger Azevedo is a Pegasus Professor in the School of Modeling. Simulation, and Training at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He is also affiliated with UCF's Departments of Computer Science, Internal Medicine, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and serves as Lead Scientist for the Leaming Sciences Faculty Cluster Initiative. He earned his PhD in Educational Psychology from McGill University and completed postdoctoral training in Cognitive Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. His research examines cognitive, metacognitive, affective, and motivational self-regulated learning processes during learning, reasoning, and problem solving with intelligent learning technologies, including intelligent tutoring systems, simulations, serious games, immersive virtual environments, human digital twins, and simulated learners. Dr. Azevedo has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Educational Research Association, received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and is a member of the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida.
