Artificial intelligence is transforming higher education, shifting the challenge from adoption towards responsible and effective governance. This keynote presents perspectives from Malaysia and the ASEAN university landscape on moving beyond AI policies towards operational governance. It examines how universities can balance innovation, accountability, data sovereignty, human oversight and institutional readiness while responding to diverse levels of AI maturity. The keynote highlights governance as an enabler of institutional transformation and explores opportunities for ASEAN universities to strengthen collaboration towards trusted, interoperable, inclusive and human-centred AI-enabled higher education across the region.
