Abstract:

This presentation will examine the educational implications of utilising Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) as a learning assistant in higher education, with a focus on the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) discipline. It presents findings from a multi-institutional study examining student engagement with GenAl tools across various ICT subjects. The analysis highlights both the opportunities and challenges associated with GenAl integration, including its impact on learning behaviours and academic practices. An adoption model will be introduced, and guidance offered on navigating ethical and pedagogical considerations. The presentation will also reflect on broader implications for curriculum design and assessment in technology-mediated learning environments. In closing, attention is directed to the specific challenges and opportunities GenAl presents for developing economies, emphasising the need for inclusive and equitable strategies. This work contributes to ongoing discussions on how higher education can critically and responsibly adapt to emerging AI technologies.
