Abstract:

Software tutors and learning companions have been the topic of research in intelligent tutoring systems for decades. With large language models, these conversational agents leverage natural conversations in the delivery of adaptive tutorial dialogues and empathetic support for applications in learning and mental health care. In this talk, I will present my work in utilizing natural language processing techniques to enable computers to understand and generate human-like stories. I will describe the varying forms of learner - AI collaboration in the story construction process that encourage peer learning, social interaction, and empathetic support. Findings and insights from these studies can lead to a better understanding of the influence of collaborative AI companions in the development of children’s narrative and emotional intelligence skills.

Biodata:

Dr. Ethel Ong leads projects in automated story generation systems and narrative-based conversational interfaces, believing that computers can better communicate with and understand the needs of their human users by listening to and sharing stories. Her work has encompassed using conversational storytelling agents or chatbots for learning, mental health awareness, cybersafety, and socio-emotional development. She has received grants to conduct studies on “Enhancing Man-Machine Interaction through Intelligent Conversational Agents”, “A National Study on Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children in the Philippines”, and "Building Mental Health Resilience and Promoting Well-being through Conversational Storytelling with a Chatbot". Currently the Dean of the College of Computer Studies of De La Salle University - Manila, she regularly conducts capacity training for students, educators and researchers on topics that include designing the research curriculum, research ethics, publishing papers, computational storytelling, and the integration of AI in education.
