Abstract
The omnipresence of technology has made out-of-class learning a common phenomenon in language learning. Language learning is increasingly taking place outside the classroom in the digital spaces. Out-of-class language learning has been found to contribute uniquely and significantly to language development, and influence learners' in-class language learning experience. However, existing second language research has been focusing predominantly on language teaching and learning inside the classroom, with insufficient attention to this important venue of language learning. In this talk, I will give an overview of this emerging research field and share some of my research with language learners in Hong Kong and mainland China. Through sharing the research findings, I hope to stimulate greater efforts in unearthing and utilizing the language learning potentials of self-directed out-of-class language learning with technology.
